Fun with a Purpose: Track Day at Goodwood

25th September 2003

HELP to FIGHT PROSTATE CANCER

Come and drive PARADE LAPS and take PASSENGER RIDES.

This will be our ninth major fund-raising event at Goodwood. Previous beneficiaries have included national charities such as Breakthrough Breast Cancer, the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Ex Services Mental Welfare Society. This event will be for equipment for two Sussex hospitals, namely:

  1. Eastbourne and Hastings
towards funds for a Holmium Laser. This enables prostate cancer to be treated without surgery; treatment takes two days instead of about three weeks.
Funds are being raised by the Sussex Freemasons for Meditech Trust.
  2. St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester
towards funds for a Portable Bladder Scanner – this facilitates examination and the equipment can be brought to the patient.
Funds are being raised through the Friends of Chichester Hospitals.

1. TRACK DAY – all 50 places already taken.

The format will be the same as our recent fund-raising track days - 10 cars on track, with 25 cars in the morning 09:00-12:30 and 25 others in the afternoon 13:30-17:00. Cars will be on track for ten-minute sessions followed by ten or twenty minutes in the pit lane. Cars entered range from Peugeot and Rover to Aston Martin and Jaguar, several Triumph TRs, MGs and other 60s sports cars. This will not be a competitive event, but a chance for drivers to have safe fun within their own limits.

The 50 track day places cost £150 each and have all been sold. The day has therefore already raised about £1500 and all further contributions from parade lap drivers and passengers will go 100% to the bottom line. The accounts for the day are sent to all drivers and will be available to anyone on request.

2. PARADE LAPS – bring your car.

You or your friends may wish to drive two parade laps of the circuit at moderate speed (no helmets, no overtaking). These take place at 09:00 and 13:30 behind the warmup lap for the track day cars and take less than ten minutes. Previous events have seen a taxi, a lorry, a minibus and anything from Bentley Turbo to Minivan and Trabant. For a small fee the photographer will provide a picture. Parade laps make a major contribution to the total and raised £640 at our last event. The cost is £20 per vehicle, passengers are free. Let me know that you want to do this, as parade lapper numbers are limited; payment can be made on the day. Morning parade lappers need to be at the circuit by 08:30, afternoon by 13:00.

3. PASSENGER RIDES – bring yourself.

Passenger rides in most of the track day cars will also be available in return for a paper money donation. Passenger donations represent a very important part of the total - they raised £1195 at our last event. Helmets will be provided and an indemnity must be signed. The event will be publicised locally.

4. SPECTATORS are welcome and free.

Bring your classic car. Circuit shop, café, WCs – take a walk around the 2.4 mile circuit banking. Dogs are not permitted, children must be kept under control.

Hire of the circuit is not cheap but the last event on Saturday 29th March 2003 raised £4,028 for the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society; it is hoped to raise a similar sum, to be split equally.
