| You are not logged in Petrol Head's views - August 2005As I was enjoying a leisurely drive around the East Anglia region, it became very apparent that so many houses out there in the sticks or in the small villages were actually using their front gardens, driveways and in some cases orchards as a home for numerous old motors. When I say old, I don't necessarily mean classic cars, but run of the mill junk like ageing Ford Sierras, Rovers, Metros, Montegos and Maestros, and all manner of cars that have probably failed their MOT's and are of absolutely no value or use to man or beast. So why do these folk hoard such rubbish? There's a simple answer...the bloody EEC and their red tape rules and regulations that mean that you now have to pay to scrap a car. Gone are the days when you could take an old nail to the local scrappy and walk away with about forty quid in beer money. These days, they have to charge you to dispose of the damned things. So the outcome is this: the countryside is being cluttered up with unsightly old wrecks because folks don't have the cash to pay out to have them scrapped. This wonderful idea has backfired. No doubt the good old bureaucrats and the green types and the lentil and sandal brigade all supported such rulings. Before all you vegetarians email me for insulting you, just remember why you have incisors in you mouths...... for ripping dead animal flesh from bones! If you were meant to eat just fruit and veg then you would have all been born with just a set of molars. Anyway, I digress. This green and pleasant land of ours is rapidly turning into a huge scrap yard. How long before old engine oil and decomposing heaps of ferrous oxide find their way into the water table and this in turn contaminates the field where they grow their organic vegetables?
