Either they work or they don’t, and if it’s the latter then they get replaced. Poor leads, however, can have a significant effect on a car’s performance, and with this in mind accessory specialist Hamilton Classic has launched a range for road cars which has been developed in racing and rallying. Called Formula Power, they are 10mm in diameter and incorporate four Kevlar strands wound individually in stainless steel to allow the passage of the maximum voltage to the spark plug. They are capable of passing up to 90,000 volts (90kv) and are also ideal for turbocharged engines as their state-of-the-art construction will cope with under-bonnet temperatures of 400degC. Hamilton’s Alastair Flack, who has been using Formula Power leads on his classic TR7 V8 rally car, said: “Poor ignition leads often go undetected, but they are an easy way to lose power or result in a minor misfire. Good quality leads are essential for owners who require a maximum spark under all conditions.” Available in blue, red or black, the leads are individually made to suit all classics. Typical prices are £50 for most 4-cylinder classic engines, £65 for a 3.8 or 4.2 Jaguar, £70 for an 8v Golf GTi and £85 for a Rover V8. Details from Hamilton Classic on 0870 204 8080. |
