Part 2 [Part 1 2 3 4 5 ]

An A40 Pick up????

Another day at school, like any other. But when I got home I was greeted with a different sight to the one that I was used to. It was now taken up greatly with the addition of an A40. It was, to say the least, in a state of disrepair. But that didn’t matter. It had an 1100cc engine and it ran. This was all we were after (to be used, once restored, in my A30). And so I took the engine out, with the help of an engine crane of course!

That weekend Dad said "Right lets get rid of this A40 now" I thought for a bit but didn't say anything as he had got rid of his recovery trailer. Within a few minutes he came out of his garage yielding a long extension lead and, you guessed it, an angle grinder!

As you can imagine it was pretty quick to cut off the various bits we were keeping, such as the rear brakes to help with the conversion, the wing mirrors and the doors. Once we had lopped these off I still couldn’t see what we were going to do with this half mutilated car. He then proceeded to cut the roof off, after this we paused to reflect at what might have been, The A40 pick up! Had it not been quite so rickety at the loss of its roof, I’m sure that it could have been a great idea.

After that brief stop we continued to cut up the rest of the car, it was extremely therapeutic to cut it up into such small pieces. But, what were we doing with them? It all became clear when he asked for a hand to drag the trailer over. When we had finished chopping and grinding the A40 there wasn’t very much to show for it, other than a few bits and bobs on the floor around it, and one trailer brim full of twisted bits of metal. And I tell no word of a lie, the trailer was only 4 foot by 6 foot (Although it was piled about 3 foot into the air!)
