Editor's welcome - September 2005

Welcome to the September 2005 edition of Classic Car Times.

The August bank holiday is the usual date for Andrew Greenwood’s Thoresby Hall show. Over the past few years this show has become a bit of a family event and tradition, and this year was no exception.

Under normal circumstances I would have provided a full review of the show consisting largely of pictures taken on the day. Unfortunately, my camera chose that day to stop working, so I’m afraid there’s no write-up on this occasion.

But the day wasn’t a complete washout.

Firstly, we managed to get a complete air filter for the Morris Minor. For some time we’d been rummaging through boxes under tables at the Newark autojumble looking for filter elements for housing we had, never managing to find one the right size or even to work out what our housing had originally come from. We were given it and the element that came with it was a paper one that had had a section cut out of it to reduce it’s diameter to make it fit. We should have guessed from this that it was going to be a problem to get a replacement element. So when we saw this complete shiny filter for £7, we abandoned our search and had it.

On the subject of autojumbles, and digressing for a moment, we also recently managed to pick up a steel bumper for the Minor at Newark. With new replacements being well over a hundred and dubious examples on Ebay starting at about £30 by the time you’ve added the postage, we were very pleased with our almost perfect £35 find.

Returning to Thoresby, the highlight of the day was a conversation I had with the owner of a 2+2 E-type. To be more specific, it wasn’t so much the conversation but the fact that he allowed me and the kids to try it out for size, and yes you’ve guessed it, I now believe that for the next few years I should be able to shoe-horn the kids into the back of one. What would happen after a few years I hear you ask? Well, hopefully by that time they should have reached that age when they’re too embarrassed to be seen out with their parents! So the search is on.

As ever, I hope you enjoy what there is of the site this month.
